When a card is upgraded it it treated as the unique version of its card type, i.e. a Character would be upgraded to a Main Character. The card is from then on treated as its new type and not its old, for all purposes: the card is now limited to one copy per deck, and for purposes of cards which search, count, or need to know a card's type, it counts as the unique version.
