Mandatory Effects
Mandatory effects are parts of already activated cards whose text effect the game state in some way. These are always started with a trigger condition, ie. “If a character is regressed”, “When this character is played”. When the conditions are met, the text of the mandatory effect gets added to the text of the activated card/ability. Players MUST try to resolve the mandatory effects to the best of their abilities. Mandatory effects are considered resolving the effects of already activated cards, and thus do not count towards a player’s 4 total activations per turn/phase.
Optional trigger effects are similar to mandatory effects, but they include a volitional phrase like “you can” or “you may” after the trigger. They resolve in the same way as mandatory effects. Like Mandatory effects, Activating an Optional trigger effect does not count towards a player’s 4 total activations per turn/phase.
