Storyteller is a format introduced alongside Into the Jungle Gym!.
Deck Structure and Setup
Storyteller format differs from Constructed Play (Daycare/Preschool/Grade School) in a number of ways:
- Players must have a deck of exactly 70 cards.
- In addition to this deck, each player must have a Table of Contents, consisting of:
- One of each non-unique, common-rarity card type (Action/Character/Field/Goal/Scene/Toy). Once these cards leave the Playground, they go to Timeout as normal and are treated as normal cards from then on.
- The Main Character to be the player's Storyteller.
- That Character's associated Frame.
A player's Storyteller and the cards in their Table of Contents are set aside in their own area, and can be played for Cost during the Build Phase in the same way as the cards in the player's hand.
Deck construction has its own rules:
- All printed sets are legal.
- Players are also able to use cards exclusive to Storyteller, marked with their own distinct symbols.
- Players are limited to one copy of each unique card, and two copies of each non-unique card between both their deck and their Table of Contents (except cards which specify a different limit, such as Silly Bands, which may be played at their stated number of copies).
- Storyteller has its own distinct banlist.
Storytellers
A Main Character card with its associated Frame becomes a player's Storyteller. Unlike other cards, when a Storyteller is removed from the Playground, it goes to Naptime, returning to its area, and cannot be played to the Playground again for a number of turns equal to the number of times it has been played this game.
The associated Frame gives the Storyteller additional features and changes how the game is played:
- Restriction/Alteration: A change to gameplay and/or deck construction.
- Ability: A reusable, activated ability with a Cookie Cost.
- Alt Win Con: An additional Alternate Win Condition.
- New Cookie Goal and New Fight Goal: These values replace the standard goals of 100 Cookies
or 10 Fight Wins to win. - Per Turn Resources: Cookies
and Cards
per turn the Storyteller gives. These are always added to the player's resources during the Resource Phase regardless of where the Storyteller is.
Characters can have different Frames for Adult and Regressed sides. A Storyteller's Frame is only active while the Storyteller is the same state as the frame - the Adult side of the Storyteller cannot use the ability or fulfil the Alt Win Con of the frame associated with its Regressed side, and vice versa.
